Goal Setting: A Smart Approach for Success

: Hi everyone. My name is Pianpian, and I'm the founder and CEO of Amotions, a platform that helps teams increase their success by developing important skills. Today, we're thrilled to have Elana Mikhaylov, a global human capital leader and executive coach, here with us. Hi Elena, thank you for joining us. Today, we are going to discuss goal setting and share some insights on how to approach it.
: Perfect. That sounds good, especially since we're right at the end of Q2 and about to step into Q3. I believe it's a great time to talk about how the first half of the year went and plan for the future, specifically how the second half of the year will unfold for you.
: Sounds great, Elena. We have heard from the community that people are wondering about goals, what kind of goals to set, and how to achieve them. These goals can include career goals, personal goals, and more. As we reach the half-year mark in June, I believe it's an important time to revisit setting goals and exploring ways to accomplish them. Could you please share some thoughts on this?
: Absolutely. Today, we're going to talk about the SMART goal-setting process. We will discuss your plan for success and explore five learning mindset strategies. We'll also cover how to tackle challenging tasks, stay on track, and make every day a winning day. SMART goals originated in the 1980s, specifically in 1981 when SMART goals were first introduced. Some of you may have set SMART goals at your company or tried them personally. While they may have been successful at times, most challenges arise from a misalignment, where the goals feel mechanical and you go through the process without considering how personally aligned you are with your goals. The purpose of today's conversation is to ensure that you align yourself with your goals.
Understanding how to execute and overcome challenges is crucial for reaching success. So let's dive into it. First and foremost, SMART stands for specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. I cannot stress enough how important this point is. Clarity is the key. What is your goal? Why is it important to you? What outcome are you looking to achieve? What is the end result you want to accomplish? These are the initial questions you should ask yourself because without understanding your "why" and lacking clarity about what you truly want, you are likely to get derailed early on in the process. For instance, let's say your goal is to obtain certification in agile. That's a specific goal, but it's also a process that you want to undertake.
Indeed, it's essential to ask yourself why a certification in Agile is important to you. What competitive edge would it provide? What actions and accomplishments are required to attain that certification? Obtaining an Agile certification is not the ultimate goal in itself. It serves as a means to advance your career, enhance your team management skills, or develop an agile mindset. Agile is more than a mere tool; it's a life skill that can be applied beyond professional contexts. Perhaps you aim to incorporate agile principles into your personal life as well.
It's crucial to understand your underlying goal and equally important to grasp the requirements involved. Let's revisit the example of wanting to obtain an agile certification and become a master in that domain. One of the requirements is to determine what certifications you need to acquire and what exams you must take. Additionally, consider the experience you need to gain and how you will practice your skills. All of these aspects are highly significant. It's also important to identify any constraints or challenges you may encounter. For instance, there might be financial constraints associated with the certification process. In such cases, you may need to approach your employer to request support or be prepared to invest your personal savings. This example highlights one potential challenge among many others that you may face.
Time is an important factor to consider. Perhaps you have a packed schedule, and it's crucial to think about how you can allocate time for this goal. Determine the timeline that would work best for you. Also, consider who else needs to be involved and who can provide assistance. Is it your team, yourself, or someone else? Understand the dependencies and identify the key stakeholders who can support you in this endeavor. Additionally, it's important to clarify when you want to pursue this goal. Is it a priority for today, tomorrow, or for the remainder of the year? Assessing the timeline and understanding the importance of the goal allows you to prioritize effectively. By mentally preparing yourself and committing to this project, you increase your chances of success.
Commitment is crucial, and now let's move on to the aspect of measurability. How will you gauge your success? What indicators will signify progress? For instance, achieving the certification can be a clear measure of success. On the other hand, if your goal is more personal, such as losing a certain number of pounds by the end of the year, it's important not to postpone tracking your progress until the final deadline. Instead, break it down into smaller milestones and determine what specific accomplishments you need to achieve along the way. Establish clear metrics to measure your success and continuously track your progress toward your goals.
Now, let's focus on achievability. Is this goal truly attainable and something you are genuinely committed to? This is a question I often ask my teams. Assess your level of commitment because if the goal seems overwhelming or unachievable, it's essential to recalibrate your efforts. It's completely normal to reassess and adjust as needed. Sometimes we have the tendency to desire instant results, wanting things to have been accomplished yesterday. Take a moment to reflect on your feelings and evaluate your excitement or any sense of dread. Pay attention to your emotional response. How do you feel about this goal? Are you motivated and enthusiastic or hesitant? Understanding your emotions and reactions will help you gauge your level of commitment and determine the necessary steps forward.
Do you genuinely believe you can achieve this goal? On a scale of one to ten, how confident do you feel about your commitment and willingness to do what it takes to succeed? Evaluating your level of commitment is crucial. Will you be willing to wake up every morning and go for a run or engage in any other necessary actions? Reflect on your dedication to this project. Consider the skills and capabilities required to achieve the goal. Do you possess the necessary skills, or do you need to develop them? This aspect is essential to assess when determining the achievability of your goal. For instance, personally, I am not a runner at all. I've tried running, but it's just not my thing. Setting a goal to run a 10-mile race by next week would not be reasonable for me. I lack the necessary skills, such as proper breathing techniques, and the capabilities of an experienced runner to achieve such a goal in such a short timeframe. It simply won't happen. However, what is reasonable is for me to set a goal to take a short run or engage in an activity that I can actually accomplish and that will still motivate and excite me. Now, there's another important aspect to consider.
The amount of effort you put into your goal needs to be in alignment with the desired end result. This is of utmost importance because it addresses the issue of cognitive dissonance. Sometimes, we may think we want something and feel enthusiastic about it initially, but if the end result doesn't truly motivate us, it won't be enough to sustain our motivation when faced with hardships, difficulties, or challenges along the way. It is crucial to ensure that the effort you invest corresponds to the expected results and that both are relevant and realistic.
Now, consider the meaningfulness of the goal to you. Is this goal truly yours? It's remarkable how often individuals set goals without deeply considering their personal connection to them. Through conversations and exploration, it often emerges that the goal is not truly their own. Therefore, it is essential to reflect on whether the goal aligns with your values, passions, and aspirations.
Understand the reason behind your goal and its significance to you. Assess the level of alignment you have with this goal and how it will truly propel you forward. What is your motivation? Consider the desired end result and why it holds immense importance to you. As a coach, engage in an exploratory conversation with yourself to delve into the reasons behind your deep commitment. What are you looking to achieve? Additionally, ensure you set a timeframe, making the goal time-bound by establishing a specific deadline for its accomplishment.
If your goal is abstract, such as having a vision for the future, it's essential to define an end result. Even a big vision typically includes a specific timeframe, such as a three-year or five-year vision. Without a determined outcome, it becomes more of an abstract concept rather than a goal. Always establish a deadline or timeline for when you aim to accomplish various aspects of your goal. This allows you to measure your progress against specific milestones. Do you have any questions so far?
: Yes, based on the feedback from the community, there are several aspects we can further clarify. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on this topic so far. You had mentioned the 'why' and why it's very important. It's basically what keeps us motivated to achieve our goals. How would you suggest developing this 'why'? Like where does someone start? Does it come from our values or something else?
: Yes, absolutely. Understanding your values is crucial because sometimes there can be a misalignment between your goals and your values. You may think you want something, but it conflicts with your core values. When setting a goal, it is important to ensure it aligns with the things you value. For instance, let's say you want to pursue an MBA on a fast track, but you also highly value your personal well-being and having time off. Achieving an MBA on a short track would require significant time and effort, which could immediately create a conflict with your top priorities and goals related to wellness and personal time.
Ensure that your values are not in conflict with each other. For example, you may value higher education and knowledge alongside your value for wellness. It's important to understand what truly matters and whether these values are conflicting or can work together harmoniously. In the case of pursuing an MBA, you might need to reconsider the timeline and duration of the goal. Instead of aiming to achieve it within one year, you could extend it to a two-year process. This allows you to find a balance where both values are aligned and support your goal without creating conflicts.
If you value your time and wellness, and you become overwhelmed by the short timeline of achieving the MBA goal, you may end up getting stressed out and eventually quitting. It is crucial to consider these factors and align them effectively to ensure your success.
: It seems necessary for individuals to take some time to sit down and truly align with their own values and priorities before they can effectively articulate their goals.
: Absolutely, your values play a significant role in understanding your 'why' and why it is meaningful to you. Throughout the SMART goals process, the importance of aligning with your values becomes apparent in every section. It is crucial to compare your goals against your values. Whether it is about being specific, relevant, realistic, achievable, or measurable, your values will always shine through. Take the time to truly understand yourself at your core and what these goals mean to you. Identify any potential conflicts and resolve them as soon as they become visible. Paying attention to your 'why' is essential because without it, you might ultimately give up.
: Certainly! That advice is very helpful. Let's continue to the next part, and then I'll ask any follow-up questions I may have.
: Absolutely, but first I’d like to talk about how clarity is key when it comes to planning for success. It's important to document your goals in a specific and tangible way. Instead of setting an abstract goal like "I want to be happy," it's more effective to define specific actions or achievements that will contribute to your overall happiness. By clearly articulating your goals, you create a roadmap for yourself and increase your chances of success.
It's important to have specific and measurable goals that align with your values and your why. And once you have that clarity, you can start identifying the steps you need to take to achieve those goals. It's important to make sure those steps are relevant and realistic based on the effort and resources you have available. So, it's not just about writing down a list of steps, but also evaluating and prioritizing them based on what's most important and feasible for you to achieve.
For example, let's say I want to lose 30 pounds. That would require me to wake up at 6:00 AM and engage in two-hour workouts every day. However, I may not be fully committed to this level of dedication. Once you realize your lack of commitment, it's time to reassess and explore alternative options. Perhaps I need to refocus my goal or consider another approach. Clarity is crucial, and I can't emphasize it enough. It's important to understand why you're pursuing this goal. For instance, losing these 30 pounds gained during COVID would likely result in improved health. Is this value important to me? So, your purpose plays a significant role here.
Needs must be very much aligned with your values and balance, right? Perhaps you value physical attractiveness and consider it highly important. It's crucial to understand why you're pursuing this goal. However, action is necessary for progress. Without taking action, nothing will happen. This may come as a bit of a newsflash, but even people who won the lottery still had to buy the lottery tickets. It's as simple as that. You can't expect things to simply fall into your lap without any effort. While there may be cases where things happen unexpectedly, such as receiving a large inheritance, other factors still had to come into play. When setting a goal, consider the actions you need to take and ensure you're committed to them.
That's a crucial aspect, right? Your brain will naturally resist taking action because it involves stepping into something new. It's akin to developing a new habit, and it takes time. However, consistency is key. It's important to hold yourself accountable. Establishing an accountability process is vital, whether through joining an accountability group or implementing personal accountability strategies. Consistently executing and taking action is what will drive your success. Many people fail not because they lack the right knowledge—they often possess all the necessary knowledge. The reason why many personal development endeavors don't yield results is because people fail to consistently implement them. That's what truly matters. It's not that the strategies weren't effective; they certainly were.
I mean, the knowledge is there, but we're not here for the knowledge. Our focus shouldn't solely be on acquiring more knowledge. Simply gathering information can give us the illusion of progress. However, true action means applying the knowledge we already have and putting it into practice. Consistency in taking action will also cultivate resilience as a positive outcome. By consistently applying what we've learned, we develop the ability to persevere and not give up in the face of setbacks.
To put it simply, it's important to stay committed to your goals. Embrace failure, evaluate your progress, learn from your experiences, and keep moving forward. Failure is actually a valuable opportunity for learning. When you stop failing, you stop growing. So view failure as a positive thing. As long as you continue to learn and make progress, you're on the right track. Self-reflection is key. Take the time to analyze both your failures and successes and determine how they contribute to your progress. Adjust your strategies as needed. Additionally, don't underestimate the power of self-acknowledgement. Recognize and appreciate your efforts and progress. When establishing habits, self-acknowledgement is essential in the habit loop.
Self-acknowledgement is a reward in itself. Take a moment to reflect on your accomplishments, what you have learned, and how you have managed to succeed. It may not have been a grand achievement, but you have still made progress. You are further along than when you first started, and that is something to be positive about. Recognize and celebrate your achievements. Learn how to acknowledge yourself, as this will propel you forward. It is through self-acknowledgement that you will continue to learn and develop new habits.
: Yes, these are all excellent points. For accountability, you can also consider joining Amotions. We have a community of individuals who are on similar journeys, aiming to achieve various goals. Sometimes these goals may even overlap, such as starting a new career, finding meaningful work, or launching a business. The community can provide social accountability and support. Additionally, self-acknowledgement is crucial. We often forget to celebrate our own achievements, no matter how small they may seem. Within the community, we can cheer each other on and celebrate even the smallest steps of progress. Thank you, Elena. Please proceed.
: All right. Now let's discuss five winning mindset strategies. The first one is to practice self-awareness through mindfulness. These two concepts are closely connected. Mindfulness allows you to slow down and observe things objectively without immediately reacting. It helps you separate your ego from your true self. Our ego is a product of our experiences, beliefs, and environment, but it is not our true essence. When you practice mindfulness, it allows you to tap into your authentic self. It provides an opportunity to view yourself from a different perspective. This is especially important when discovering your why. Avoid jumping to immediate conclusions and take the time to explore deeply.
Maybe take a moment to center yourself and figure out exactly where you stand. This will help you distinguish whether what you want is truly aligned with your thoughts, beliefs, and desires. Why is it important to you? The practice of mindfulness is crucial for gaining self-awareness and understanding your reactions to different situations. It allows you to observe your own emotions, mindsets, and beliefs. For instance, let's consider a personal example of going on a diet. When practicing mindfulness, you can slow down and genuinely appreciate the food you are eating.
I mean, by breaking away from the existing habit loop of mindlessly consuming food, you become more aware of your hunger cues, food preferences, and taste preferences. For example, let's say you thought you liked coffee. Through mindfulness, you may discover that you actually prefer oat milk with your coffee. It's a small change, but it highlights the importance of taking a moment to understand your personal preferences. Similarly, as you build your business, you may have come across various advice from well-known gurus and read numerous self-help books.
Right. At this point, you're trying to determine your opinion on all of this, right? What resonates with you? There are various options to consider. For example, you might be advised to start podcasting, become an influencer, or pursue other strategies. However, it's possible that these approaches don't align with your goals and make you feel uncomfortable. It's essential to figure out what works best for you. Taking the time to slow down and engage in this process is crucial. Moreover, it's important to open yourself up to the possibilities of "what if." Consider the potential positive outcomes. What if it does work out? What if this turns out to be amazing? Rather than dwelling on the fear of failure, embrace the possibilities of success.
Look at this as a positive opportunity, right? Consider what actions, thoughts, and feelings you would have if this endeavor were already a success. Approach it from a positive perspective and envision yourself thriving. What steps would you take? How would you approach it? Instead of focusing on limitations and self-doubt, imagine the possibilities of what can be achieved. We, as humans, have incredible potential if we break free from the limitations that have been imposed on us throughout our existence. Let go of the mindset that there are inherent limits to what you can do, and embrace the belief that you are capable of achieving remarkable things.
Right? So what if you allow yourself the possibility of winning now? The next strategy is, of course, taking small steps. I understand that you have ambitious goals and you want to achieve everything at once, as we discussed yesterday. You envision the success of your venture and all the milestones along the way. However, it's important to enjoy the process by breaking it down into manageable steps. When faced with a big task, it can easily become overwhelming. For instance, you may already be thinking about securing a seed round or an A-round investment, among other things. It's fantastic to have such a vision, but remember that reaching that goal requires celebrating smaller wins along the way. Recognize and appreciate each step you take towards your ultimate objective. Now let's talk about expressing gratitude.
I think it's important. In positive psychology, maintaining a gratitude journal is often considered a key practice. Focusing on the positives will keep you engaged and motivated to take action. Noticing what is already working out will propel you forward and help you believe that anything is possible. Even when faced with negatives, it's important to learn from them, but also to look for the other side and find opportunities for growth. Like a coin, success consists of both wins and failures, and it's crucial to see it from that perspective.
Expressing gratitude along the way will help you focus on the positives in every aspect, even from a failure perspective. Let's say, for example, that something didn't go as planned. Perhaps you did a presentation that didn't go well. That's okay. On the positive side, you can be grateful for the opportunity to express yourself and share your thoughts. Even if it wasn't an immediate success, taking that step forward is still a positive outcome. Now, let's talk about celebrating your wins. Forming a habit loop requires acknowledging and celebrating your achievements. Our minds seek rewards, and it's important to understand how we can acknowledge ourselves as we face challenges, make progress, and succeed. Recognizing our own efforts is essential for achieving success.
Celebrating your wins, whether it's for yourself or with your team, is extremely important. Let's make sure that you prioritize doing so.
: Yes, I think these are great points. For leaders who are listening, expressing gratitude for yourself and also for your team, and celebrating with the team, will go a long way. Sometimes, we can be so focused on delivering products or business results that we forget to take a moment, say cheers, and thank each other.
Why is gratitude important? It enables you to perceive opportunities rather than setbacks. If you want to succeed in your personal life, business, or anywhere else, you must view everything as a chance to grow, develop, achieve, and succeed, even finding joy.
: Absolutely. Why is gratitude important? It enables you to perceive opportunities rather than setbacks. If you want to succeed in your personal life, business, or anywhere else, you must view everything as a chance to grow, develop, achieve, and succeed, even finding joy. Gratitude is the foundation of this perspective, as it fosters appreciation for the things in your life and generates joy. I would say it's absolutely essential because it opens your eyes to the possibilities inherent in everything.
So, that's it in a nutshell. As for the winning strategies, please apply them as you progress towards your SMART goals.
: Sounds great. I would love to hear from the community listening. What are your goals? What have you learned from our discussion today? What actions have you taken, and what results have you seen? I've heard from some users who have implemented similar strategies, and it has fostered trust and support within their teams. So, I would love to hear from you.
